As the sunny months of summer have come to an end for people living in the northern hemisphere, it is now time to start preparing for cooler weather conditions. Although Bali is a tropical island, the locals often feel a little chilly especially when they get caught in the rain. Our Spa Manager, Ms. Nengah Supadmi shares a few traditional remedies using natural ingredients to help warm the body inside and out.

Boreh is a paste made from coriander, ginger and rice that has been used by generations of Balinese farmers and villagers to ward off the cold. These ingredients are soaked in water for about 15 minutes and then drained and mashed into a paste using a mortar and pestle. The paste is then applied all over the body. For the best results, boreh should be left on overnight as ginger has a warming effect that penetrates the skin and also relieves tiredness.  

Another traditional remedy is a hot tonic known as lomi-lomi, which is a healthy blend of ginger, honey, lime and hot water. It is the perfect drink for chilly days and can help alleviate flu and sore throat symptoms. Lomi-lomi is now served at many Balinese spas to complete a body treatment where the skin has been exposed.
