Vesak Day is an auspicious occasion for followers of the Buddhist faith that will fall on 29th May 2018. Aligned with the Hindu lunar calendar, the date varies each year to coincide with the full moon. This national holiday will see devotees gather before dawn at temples around the Indonesian archipelago to pray and place symbolic offerings at the feet of statues depicting the Buddha.
More than just a religion, Buddhism is a way of life based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gotama, an Indian royal who believed that wealth and luxury did not guarantee happiness. This notion drove him to travel widely, explore different philosophies and seek the key to human happiness. He found enlightenment through meditation and attained Buddhahood, which enabled him to spend the remainder of his life teaching the law of absolute truth.
