Bali’s Cultural Calendar - Tumpek Wariga

Today, followers of the Hindu faith in rural parts of the island is celebrating Tumpek Wariga. This auspicious day pays tribute to trees including coconut palms, which happen to dominate the landscape at Kayumanis Jimbaran.

Alongside rice and bamboo, the coconut palm has always been considered one of the main pillars that sustain life on the island. It is extremely versatile and every single part of the palm has a purpose. The trunk is a sturdy timber, the leaves are woven into offerings and the nuts produce natural oil that has extraordinary health benefits. On Tumpek Wariga, farmers wrap their fruit bearing trees and coconut palms in lengths of cloth and perform a small ritual. They pray for healthy growth and an of abundance of fruit that can be harvested and sold for a profit.
